The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ

The History of the Baptism Site

The Baptism Site at Bethany beyond the Jordan (or al-Maghtas) is where John baptised Jesus almost 2000 years ago.  For the first centuries this place was revered, held sacred by the early Christians and many came here to be baptised.  Churches were built, hermits and monks came to live here and pilgrims came from thousands of miles away to pray and bathe in the waters.

The John the Baptist Trail

The John the Baptist Trail allows the visitor, in just over an hour, to cross the Baptism Site like the eternal Pilgrim, visiting all the important places.
